Carpets and thermal insulation

Carpets-furniture-and-thermal insulation In the cold months, carpets make rooms warm Carpets are truly the princes of interior design at this time of year; soft and cosy, they immediately create an atmosphere of recollection and relaxation.
The Nordics call it hygge house, and in the cold months even those who live in temperate climates (and may have recently finished complaining about the heat) like it.
The lower the temperatures outside, the more we seek a warm embrace indoors, and we long to recreate a “nest” of tactile and visual sensations to welcome us in the long hours of darkness.
The aesthetic aspect is soon resolved.
Let's take a look at some practical matters to make the most of our winter home. Carpets-warming-in-winter-thermal insulation

CARPETS AND THERMAL INSULATION

The main function of the carpet, from a functional point of view, is thermal insulation.
It is not for nothing that carpet traditions around the world belong to both cold, high-altitude and desert climates, where man has learnt to protect himself from high temperatures thanks to wool.
The immediate comfort that walking on a thick carpet gives is unparalleled and inspires one to take off one's footwear and remain in contact with the soft, warm surface.
There is no need to resort to vaguely ethnic furnishing styles; on the contrary, even in our homes furnishing with carpets is an excellent solution to increase the comfort of those who enter and stay there.
That is why, especially in winter, it becomes functional to add carpets in the living area, in the rooms and, in particular, in corridors and passage spaces to the sleeping area.

CARPETS AND HEATING

The carpet has to deal with the heating systems in the house.
Particularly with underfloor heating, which radiates heat from the entire walking surface, spreading it evenly to the entire room.
In parallel with the spread of this type of heating, carpet manufacturers have also adapted and, if you read the label carefully, you will see that most carpets are compatible with underlay coils.
So go ahead and choose from a wide range of proposals, guided only by your aesthetic taste.
In contrast to other situations, in which a thicker carpet provides more heat, with underfloor heating care must be taken to use thin carpets, no higher than 1.5 cm, as the heat must easily pass through the artefact, and not be retained by the carpet!
A caution, perhaps obvious but always best to specify: with more traditional heating systems, such as fireplaces and stoves, especially wood-burning ones, where open flames are a necessity, it is advisable to place the carpets at a sufficient distance to avoid inconveniences such as gushes or embers that could fall on the mantle, ruining it irreversibly.

CARPETS AND CLEANING

Perhaps the only downside of a well “dressed” house with carpets may be its maintenance.
Carpets are in contact with floors and shoes, and keep them clean is not always simple.
Once again, we suggest using the label indications, respecting the permitted manner.
Vacuuming must be done carefully, so as not to ruin the natural yarns, as well as washing.
Many synthetic fibres, with excellent insulation performance and a more than elegant appearance, solve all problems of delicacy.
Having said that, at least for one's own home, one can intervene upstream, i.e. on the one hand make good use of outdoor doormats and step-dryers, On the other hand, get into the habit of leaving your shoes at the entrance, replacing them with indoor footwear that will certainly be more appropriate and environmentally friendly.
