Carpets are beautiful, they are certainly useful, but they inevitably get dirty.Cleaning is therefore a fundamental step in caring for carpets.
Washing carpets does not have to be a titanic task, and it must be done safely by following a few basic rules.
I signature carpets always carry instructions on the label to keep them in their most splendid shape.
The care to be given to carpets varies depending on the materials they are made of, but in each case there are ideal treatments for excellent results.
Natural coconut doormats.
The coconut is a natural material, Therefore, even if it is very resistant, it must be treated taking into account a certain variability that may characterise it.
For an initial cleaning, it will be sufficient to remove the dust that accumulates between the bristles. In this case, just be sure to lay it on the floor with the bristles pointing downwards and beat it with the beater, just like in the old days.
After the bulk of the dust has been removed, the doormat can be vacuumed with a normal household hoover.
From time to time you may want a deeper cleaning, and then we suggest washing it. Simple water will suffice.
Once the bristles have softened, you can proceed to scrub it with a hard bristle brush: the wash will be deep but at the same time gentle.
Ideally, this wash should be carried out on a warm, sunny day to ensure that it dries quickly and completely outdoors.
It will be essential to let it dry in the sun, strictly on a flat surface, avoiding hanging it or, worse, folding it in half.
The natural water-based material becomes flexible and deformable, and the doormat may take on unwanted shapes and folds.
Rubber doormats
By contrast, a rubber doormat can be “abused” without suffering any consequences.
It is very easy to clean; all you need is a jet of running water, with the addition of a detergent (neutral soap, washing-up liquid or hand cleanser) as desired.
It can be rubbed with wet cloths or stiff brushes.
The rubber will not be damaged either by mechanical actions, such as rubbing, or by the use of chemicals or other substances.
The only thing to do is to rinse the doormat thoroughly, to avoid any detergent residue remaining. Drying should be done with the doormat lying vertically or on the ground, preferably in the shade.
Rubber also deforms, so leaving it straddling a fence, in the sun, would cause the carpet to warp, which will be difficult to recover from in the short term.
Practical and fast cleaning for rubber doormats
Cotton carpets
(all-purpose carpets, kitchen carpets, bathroom carpets)
They can be comfortably washed by machine, taking care not to use too high temperatures, which could ruin the non-slip latex or rubber bottom. We always recommend not exceeding 30° on the label. In order not to stress cotton fibres, the ideal would be not to spin (or at least to do it lightly, without overdoing the speed) and not to use an electric dryer.
Drying in the sun, or at least in the open air, remains the best solution.
It is important to make sure that the carpets dry completely to avoid the creation of those typical wet fabric odours that are virtually impossible to eliminate later.
Microfibre carpets
Microfibre is a synthetic fabric characterised by high absorption power but also very fast drying times.
It is a much less delicate fibre than cotton, so it can be machine washed, even using a vigorous spin cycle.
The carpet will be perfectly clean and ready in no time.
We always check labels
Rubber slit rolls
A top product in terms of practicality, slit rolls are stain-resistant and by far the easiest to keep clean.
Unpretentious in terms of care, they can simply be wiped with a damp cloth, with or without detergent, or with the same cloth (mop or other) with which you wash the floor.
The rubber also allows for prints with colours that remain unchanged over time.
A wipe and go!
Professional step dryer
Top product for the work mat section, designed for high footfall areas, the professional step dryer is equally resistant to cleaning treatments, from vacuuming (preferably with medium power machines, and with soft bristles) to washing.
The colours of the prints were chosen to be of a superior quality, to last over time.
Maximum temperatures of 40°/50° are recommended in the washing machine, while the tumble dryer can reach a maximum of 60°.
Once a year, a deep cleaning can be carried out using specialised laundries. Carpet and doormat cleaning maintenance
Furnishing carpets
Furniture carpets, the ones in the living room, for instance, can be washed! Of course, not in the washing machine at home, due to size and weight issues.
For best results, it is best to refer to a professional, trusted cleaner, specifying the type of yarn they are made of and, if possible, the type of colouring.
Alternatively, we accept the idea that the colours can be changed, and the carpet will thus be able to show the passing of time (which, by the way, can even be a plus for a carpet!). For routine cleaning, an ordinary hoover with a carpet beater will suffice.
For defined stains, one can act directly with a wet cloth and neutral detergent, or the natural cleaning agent par excellence, bicarbonate of soda, leaving it to act for 24 hours and then brushing.
For furnishing carpets, work directly on the stain
