Hygge: happiness lies within the home

warm Hygge-style atmospheres warm Hygge-style atmospheres Especially in winter, if we want to go at school for happiness we can look north, far north, where the cold likes it and where people have learned to appreciate the gifts of this season, which is even longer for them.
In Denmark and Norway there is the word Hygge, which stands for Happiness (a type of happiness linked to a sense of contentment); a similar concept in Norway is made by Lagom, which instead leads more to a sense of balance, moderation and simplicity.
As of 2016, the term hygge is listed as a new word by the Oxford Dictionary, so we can embrace this idea, and allow ourselves to be embraced by an idea of happiness that brings us indoors, in comfort, among simple pleasures far from the hustle and bustle. Winter, in the Nordic dark, is the season of lighted candles, of hot and fragrant herbal teas, of time to oneself, of hobbies to do together with a few family members, of Christmas sweets to share with a few friends, and of a home that welcomes with warmth and intimacy.
These simple things, which make one feel good and provide daily, quiet happiness, are hyggeligt. Danish citizens are the happiest people in the world, as well as champions in the consumption of sweets and candles.
It is worth listening to their teaching, and trying to transform our lives and homes according to their instructions.

The hygge decalogue:

  • Light: candles, low, soft lighting, lit fireplace
  • Being together, with (a few) friends and family, in a nice, light atmosphere
  • Warning: no mobile phones or outside distractions. You are together to enjoy the moment
  • Food and drink to be prepared together, by hand, according to traditional recipes
  • Sweets: indulge in moments of sweetness, also for the palate, with cakes and chocolate
  • Contact with nature, e.g. taking walks in the forest, in silence
  • Christmas: the most hyggeligt time of the year
  • Comfort: the house becomes a warm embrace, with pillows, blankets, carpets (preferably long-haired)
  • Relaxation: alone, one devotes oneself to self-care, body care, or reading, without looking at the clock
  • Harmony: being together in a pleasant way, avoiding polemical arguments and discussions

The hygge house

A hyggeligt home is comfortable and cosy, conveying security and intimacy. The furnishings and accessories encourage relaxation and enjoyment.
Textiles triumph - soft and warm: cushions, carpets multiply and overlap, but always with a view to Scandinavian simplicity and functionality.
The environments are cosy, but at the same time brightThe walls are light-coloured, the lighting is well cared for.
Preference is given to natural materials, first and foremost wood (in light wood).

Every room, from the entrance hall to the kitchen to the bathroom, can be interpreted according to hygge dictates, aiming at cosiness and relaxation, but there is a part of the house (of the inhabitant's choice) that becomes the favourite for spending time in a hygge manner.
