Home is a safe and clean place

Even before Covid-19, that shoes were the dirtiest thing you could bring into the house we all knew. Home is a safe place, but today this also means clean. The very concept of “cosy” is modified to include the sense of security and peace of mind that comes with knowing that all precautionary measures, to counter infection, have been taken.

“Mask, distance, wash hands”.” is the mantra of recent months, and will be for a long time to come. The good news is twofold: the method is effective in limiting the risk of infection, and we are getting used to this new routine, which is becoming lighter and lighter to comply with. It only remains to extend it to the journey we take before crossing the threshold of our flat. And even here, with just a few moves you can structure a real obstacle course for dirt (a general term for the multitude of micro-organisms that normally lurk on the soles of our shoes), which will also have the pleasant side effect of further decorating the entrance to the house, improving the overall appearance and sense of welcome that the building will give to its inhabitants and guests.

Let us imagine a path in which dirt is trapped, starting from the coarsest to the thinnest parts, and proceeding from the outside to the inside, until it enters our flat. Let us take the typical situation that can occur in a building or apartment block. It will also be easy to transport the idea to a single house or a cottage.

Let us start from the outside: gate, driveway, steps or hall. Here you should find a robust carpet, rather large in size, to encompass the vast surface area in front of the door, wide-meshed and made of plastic material, which fears neither cold nor water. By simply stepping on it, the bulk of the residue under the soles of shoes will be removed. This is typical for public buildings, and areas with high footfall, and should also be extended to private, communal areas, because of its excellent functionality.

In front of the building gate, but in a protected or even fully covered area, one can place a doormat dryer, This has a dual function: to scrape away further particles (at this point finer, because the coarser material will already have been retained in the previous step), but also to retain the moisture we are bringing in from outside. The soft material, a polypropylene with the softness of a fabric, also makes it possible to spray this doormat with a special disinfecting spray for carpets. For best results, the soles should be scrubbed thoroughly in this area, and then dried in the next step.

Finally entering the building, still in the common parts such as the access to the stairwell, you will find a super absorbent, microfibre carpet. Extremely soft, it is also rightly called the “magic carpet”, because it really does achieve exceptional results in terms of drying out shoes. At the end of this path, of contiguous carpets but with different functions, you will face the stairs with decidedly cleaner shoes, and the approach to private spaces will be with a greater protection of the health of their inhabitants. The good habit of placing a doormat on the doorstep of flats combines the decorative and the practical, allowing for personalisation of style.

Even a guest will notice the difference, appreciating the special attention to hygiene that will be part of the sense of welcome given to visitors. A good message to spread, along with virtuous habits that it will be good to make our own and never abandon again.
