How big should the carpet be, compared to the furniture it contains?

The optimal solution is when the carpet completely contains the furniture, i.e. when all the furniture sits comfortably on top of the carpet.
If this is not possible, larger items (such as armchairs and sofas) are only allowed to be on the carpet with their front legs, while the rear legs, which do not fall into the view of the person entering, may remain off the carpet.
For smaller pieces of furniture, such as tables or chairs, on the other hand, there are no exceptions to the basic rule: they must be well centred on the carpet.

When assessing the size of this, it must be borne in mind that a space of 60 to 90 cm must be left between the various pieces of furniture, to avoid the storage effect, i.e. indiscriminate accumulation of elements, on which one will fatally stumble at every turn.

The same rule should also be considered under the dining table: the carpet should be large enough to hold the chairs even when they are moved away from the table, e.g. to allow guests to sit down.

Tricks of the trade

Before proceeding with the purchase of a carpet, In order not to run into mistakes and consequent regrets, there is a very simple and straightforward system for assessing whether and how to be sure that you have chosen the right sized carpet for the room and furniture.
All we have to do is mark the perimeter of our new carpet with paper tape, and evaluate with our own eyes the effect it makes.
If we are also thinking of moving furniture, we can create templates corresponding to the surface of each item with old newspapers, so that we can move them effortlessly around the room.
Only once the optimal solution has been found will we move on to the actual moving of the heavy items. Finally, here is a suggestion for “saving” a too-small carpet to be the perfect one for our room. It may be a piece that we are fond of, or one of rare beauty or value, so we will not be able to resist incorporating it into our interior design.
A choice of the heart allows us to break the rules taxes, through a double trick. We can locate a smaller piece of furniture, such as a coffee table or a bench, and place it on top of our carpet, respecting the classical proportions, thus enhancing both elements.
Or we could superimpose the smaller carpet on a larger, less valuable one, reserving it the central position, while the bottom would respect the standards listed above.
