5 June 2021 World Environment Day
Home enthusiasts here know that we at www.iltappetoconlafirma.com have a green soul, which goes hand in hand with taking care of the environment in which we live.World Environment Day is indeed a special day because we can consider Nature as our largest home, and our mission is to make it more beautiful, healthy and welcoming, just like we do our homes. This year's World Environment Day has a specific theme, namely the “Ecosystem Restoration”.
This emphasises the importance not only of preventing further threats to the environment by doing everything in our power to reverse the trend of exploitation of natural resources, but even states the obligation to repair the damage which have already been brought about by decades of wicked behaviour, the consequences of which are widely tangible to all.
Nature should not only be protected and respected; it should also be cared for. Next 5 June, therefore, will be the start of a United Nations Decade for Ecosystem Restoration.
The goal, globally, is to bring land, forests, waterways, seas and cities back to life and health.
In this regard, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) makes available a World Environment Day 2021 Practical Guide (in English, The Ecosystem Restoration Playbook) which can be downloaded at this link: Download the guide
We can also do a lot with small gestures
The watchword is “ACT”, or rather act now, each as far as he is concerned and within his power to do. No one excluded. The guide, a slimmed-down tool of just 21 pages, is interesting because, alongside broad principles and food for thought, it proposes a series of practical tips for taking immediate action in favour of the planet, to slow down and stop the degradation of ecosystems starting right from our daily context of life.
It starts with three macro-areas in which to concretely commit oneself: taking action, changing one's behaviour (by making “smart” choices), making one's voice heard in local contexts where the environment is discussed, demanding that all initiatives go in the direction of sustainability.
There are 7 ecosystems into which we can divide the environment: forests and trees, rivers and lakes, oceans and coastlines, countryside, mountains, peat bogs, urban environment. And it is the latter that makes it clear how even small actions can make a difference.
The invitation is to participate, with donations but also with voluntary work, to get informed about the local reality (what are its characteristics? What are the specific dangers for the context in which we live?), but also to start taking care of our balcony, garden (home or school), however small, start growing something, preferably native plants (e.g. a small flower bed with bee-friendly flowers, where these precious insects can find food and shelter) and composting. At neighbourhood or village level, start small green areas where possible. Finally, go viral: in an ever-connected world, where, also thanks to social networks, the main protagonists are influencers, why not become a testimonial for environmental protection, growing around us a community that follows and sets good examples in this regard?
This would create mass micro-repair movements that, all together, would undoubtedly produce improvements in the liveability and pleasantness of the entire city.
So, the question to ask, once again, is: what can I do for the environment? And, immediately afterwards: what do I intend to start with?
