Christmas as the house changes face Christmas is exactly one month away, but lovers of home decorations are already in fervent activity since the thermometer has dropped, even slightly, and the last autumn festivities, such as Halloween or All Saints' Day, have passed.
It is already festive time for them, and their homes are already changing radically. The festivity that is supposed to make children dream, bringing the magic of fairy tales into real life as well, amidst the anticipation of flying sleighs and surprises to be found under the tree, is actually one of the most eagerly awaited moments for many who can be categorised as true Christmas decoration fanatics.
As a phenomenon of custom, perhaps this is the only occasion that really has the ability to radically transform the home, creating an entire backdrop for a cosy domestic atmosphere that speaks of joy and wonder.

The inspiration, although in different stylistic outcomes, is that of the Nordic environment, cold and wintry, where all traditions set the origin of the bearer of gifts.
Here then are the colours of the forest (green and wood), of snow (silver and white), of the lights that light up the nights (gold), and of course red, the colour of the holidays.
Whether the stylistic choice of objects with which to decorate the home or the table is classic or designer, one almost always finds suggestions that tend towards monochrome, or a simple palette of red and green, exceptionally matched precisely to “do Christmas”.

Where do the decorations appear?

There are really no limits: Christmas decorations are, by nature, invasive. Perhaps only ancillary rooms (garages, closets, attics) are exempt from becoming ideal places where trinkets, festoons and decorations peep out.
We start with the front door: it is customary to hang wreaths here, borrowed from the Nordic tradition (Germanic, then spread to the Anglo-Saxon countries, and from there back to the rest of Europe), the first sign of good luck and welcome for those arriving from outside.
Leaves of forest shrubs (holly, pine and others) are mixed with berries, dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks, pine cones and all sorts of trimmings.

It comes naturally, in this regard, choose one appropriate doormat, which will preferably be red (thus creating the classic match between the green of the foliage and the red of the carpet), and with a themed subject, to be chosen from the many available.

The garland can also enter the home, finding a place above the fireplace or as a table centrepiece. In this case, candles can be added, to create a cosy atmosphere particularly suited to winter evenings and the spirit of anticipation in the run-up to Christmas.

The die-hards will not miss an opportunity to exploit every corner of the house to display all sorts of ornaments - reindeer, gnomes, stars and snowflakes - while for a high-impact scenic effect it is more effective to identify a single focal point where to concentrate the decorations and draw attention to it, making it the centrepiece of the house.

Under the tree

Usually this focal point is concentrated in the Christmas tree, which remains the highlight of the decoration, present even in the homes of holiday detractors, perhaps in a minimal form, but unfailingly so.
The added touch will also be to enrich the pine base, right where the gifts will be, on the magical night, by placing a mat with Christmas theme right at the foot of the decorated tree.
The room will thus be completely inspired by Christmas, from the floor to the pine tip. This solution will appeal to those who intend the festivities in the most traditional way. The question brings us to a clear choice: will the decorations (especially the tree) be designer, hence monochrome, or cheerful and almost kitch, with a whirlwind of lights and colours that is so cheerful but would horrify an interior designer?

If the decoration is minimal

Design magazines, and social media that feed on images, such as Pinterest or Instagram, are real wellsprings of inspiration if you lean towards the contemporary version of Christmas decoration. In this case, the decoration will be monothematic, essential and monochrome. Allusions, more than anything else, subtle references to the idea of adornment, which maintain an allure of refinement, in the desire to amaze with the absence, lightness or evanescence of matter.
This is not the home of the decoration enthusiast, we must get over it! The true enthusiast, on the other hand, even if he is a design lover, will be happy to make a departure from the laws of style to indulge in a period of trinkets and festoons.

Those who really don't want to miss a single opportunity to inspire Christmas every moment of the day, will greatly appreciate the fashion dedicated to pets, an invaluable domestic presence but often also the recipients of playful attention from their human companions.
The Christmas costumes for dogs and cats are very funny, bringing cheer at the price of a small sacrifice that our four-legged friends will gladly make, with their proverbial generosity (some doubt remains in the case of felines, who instead react with a certain irritation to what they interpret as harassment).
If, on the other hand, it is self-deprecation that dominates our festivities, there will be no shortage of jerseys with reindeer or Father Christmas, which in the blink of an eye will transform the most austere of the family into cute companions for moments of light-hearted merriment.
