Olivo Tappeti's latest signature comes from recycled plastic. Thanks to the creative ferment and forward-looking vision of a company that has always stood for innovation and ideas, we have lifted the curtain on the latest project in the field of environmental sustainability: the doormat Bottleweave. Proudly presented at the fair Milan Home 2024, this doormat represents a real innovation in the use of recycled plastic because it demonstrates how the transformation and reuse of PET bottles can give birth to something new.
In this article, we will discuss Bottleweave, its ecological impact and how this initiative can help promote environmental sustainability in our daily lives and in the carpet industry.
35 plastic bottles to make a 40×60 cm doormat
35 PET bottles per doormat, how the project came about and why
Bottleweave is the carpet created with sun bottles in PET - as many as 35 to be precise - and is therefore made from 100% recycled material and is itself 100% recyclable. We wanted to give this product not only a functional sense - it is a excellent step dryer to be used in various contexts - but also make it a symbol of the power of transformation and change.
How is Bottleweave constructed? Simple! The recycled bottles are recovered from the landfill, washed and sterilised several times so that they can be used again without hazards to hygiene and safety. Then, through a mechanical melting and grinding process, they are reduced to flakes - small flake-like fragments - from which materials not needed for production such as paper, aluminium or other trace elements are filtered out and end up in the collection. Once “purified”, the PET-flakes are carefully processed and turned into yarn. This is the new material second life with which we then make Bottleweave according to classical carpet construction techniques.
More recycled material for eco-friendly production
This method of recovering recycled material involves a significant reduction of 70% in the use of energy e of the 85% in the use of water required to produce the polyester threads from which a virgin carpet is usually made. A crucial aspect is also the reduction of CO2 emissions during production, a sign of how this project really does make an impact towards a cleaner, more sustainable world.
An idea in favour of environmental sustainability, appreciated at the Fair
The proper recycling of PET is not only an essential practice to reduce environmental impact, but also represents a return to life. Plastics, considered a sad legacy for future generations, find a second chance of use and above all a new form through Bottleweave, helping to lighten the world we love.
The environmental sustainability message of the Bottleweave PET doormat lies in its contribution to change. Plastic bottles are a major environmental pollutant, and recycling these bottles to create a product like Bottleweave helps reduce the amount of waste going to landfills and prevents pollution.
We want to show that even with an everyday object like a doormat it is possible to preserve natural resources and mitigate the impact on the atmosphere. For its message of environmental sustainability and innovative reuse of PET bottles, Bottleweave was selected by The Lifestyle Trade Fair at the recent Milan Home Fair 2024.
