Olivo Tappeti's commitment in times of lockdown
Material ready and deliveries respected
The path of producing a carpet of Olivo Tappeti starts with market research and trend analysis; the design is entrusted to our In-house Style Centre, and production takes place in third-party factories, located abroad, as is the norm for most products marketed worldwide. The globalised market has in logistics an indispensable material support, so much so that this is the thermometer to measure its health (as quoted by Roberta Carlini in her 9 March 2021 article for “Il Bo live”, to be read here )
We are all interconnected, not only through smartphones, but precisely through the production and marketing of goods.
Then a shocking, global event happens, such as the 2020 pandemic, and the world's economy crashes at a moment's noticeWith unprecedented severity, there are shortages of raw materials and semi-finished goods, with the associated increase in production costs, the rising cost of transport, delays in supplies and the impossibility of forecasting. In particular, China and India are suffering from this stoppage.
People and economies suffer from the pandemic.
maintaining a constant supply of stock The European Parliament (question of January 2021) notes that “the cost of transporting goods from Chinese ports to European ports has recently seen increases ranging from 700% to 800%’.
Almost simultaneous increases, affecting all sectors. The difficulty is exacerbated by the scarcity of available containers. Those containers that represent the real revolution of our times, making globalisation effectively possible. Delivery times are getting longer, from 30 to 100 days.
It is easy to see that fulfilling orders becomes almost impossible for European companies.
Olivo Tappeti - Since 2017, we have been the leading importer of carpets in Italy.
What to do, then?
Of the various possible options, we opted for maintaining relations with our historical suppliers, some of whom work exclusively for us: they are located in several countries around the world, in Egypt and Turkey, in Belgium and England, but also in India, China and America
We have focused on long-term production (6 to 8 months) in order to maintain a constant supply of stock.
In the understandable increase in consumer prices, caused by higher transport but also raw material prices, we absorbed most of the increases, without passing them on to the customer, so that the final price would not vary too much.
This is an emergency situation that must be dealt with in the best possible way. Are we succeeding? We can say yes. We made strategic choices having in mind what is our obsession: to serve our customers to the best of our ability, whatever conditions we find ourselves in, even extreme ones.
Some delivery delays were inevitable, but we aimed to continue serving our customers and thus cope with the shortage of supplies upstream in the production chain, without this tsunami hitting our partners and customers downstream.
With cautious optimism, we are confident that the peak of the crisis will be over by the end of the year, and that we can return to normal in the first half of 2022.
